Collection: Spawn &
Cultures

Explore mushroom liquid cultures and fully colonised grain spawn for your next growing project. Choose the starting point that suits your setup and experience.

A STRONG START, A HEALTHY HARVEST

Every successful mushroom grow begins with the right mycelium. Explore our mushroom liquid cultures to inoculate sterile grain or all-in-one MushBag™ Grow Kits, or choose ready-to-use, pre-colonised grain spawn to skip the early stages.

01 What is the difference between liquid culture and grain spawn?

Liquid culture contains living mushroom mycelium suspended in a nutrient-rich solution, used to inoculate sterile grain. Grain spawn is grain that has already been colonised by mycelium and is ready to introduce to a suitable growing substrate. Both are used at different stages of mushroom cultivation.

02 Are your mushroom grain spawn bags ready to use?

Yes. Our mushroom grain spawn bags are already colonised with the selected mushroom species, so there's no need to inoculate the grain yourself. They're ready to be mixed with a suitable substrate, saving you the time and effort of preparing your own spawn.

03 Do I need liquid culture if I'm buying grain spawn?

No. Our pre-colonised mushroom grain spawn already contains living mycelium, so you don't need to purchase a separate liquid culture syringe. Liquid culture is intended for growers who prefer to inoculate and colonise their own sterile grain.

04 Can I use liquid culture with sterile grain bags or MushBag Grow Kits?

Yes! Our mushroom liquid cultures can be used to inoculate sterilised grain bags, including millet and rye, or directly into our MushBag™ All-In-One Mushroom Grow Kits. While sterile grain bags require transferring the fully colonised grain to a suitable substrate, MushBag combines both grain and substrate in one convenient bag.

05 Can liquid culture be injected directly into CVG substrate?

No. Standalone CVG substrate is designed to be mixed with fully colonised grain spawn rather than inoculated directly with liquid culture. However, our MushBag™ All-In-One Mushroom Grow Kit contains sterilised grain and substrate, allowing you to inoculate directly with liquid culture without preparing separate grain spawn.

06 Should beginners choose liquid culture or grain spawn?

Both can be suitable for beginners, depending on your preferred growing method. Pre-colonised grain spawn is generally the easier option, as it skips the inoculation and initial grain colonisation stages. Alternatively, pairing liquid culture with a MushBag™ All-In-One Mushroom Grow Kit provides a convenient introduction to inoculation without needing to prepare separate grain and substrate.

07 Which mushroom varieties are available?

Our collection includes a range of gourmet and functional mushroom species, including Lion's Mane, Oyster, Shiitake, Reishi and more. Availability varies by product, so check the individual listings to find your preferred species in liquid culture or grain spawn form.

08 What do I need to get started with mushroom liquid culture or grain spawn?

If you're using liquid culture, you'll need suitable sterilised grain bags or a MushBag™ All-In-One Mushroom Grow Kit. If you're starting with pre-colonised grain spawn, you'll need a compatible growing substrate and an appropriate fruiting setup. The exact supplies depend on your chosen mushroom species and growing method.

09 How should I store liquid cultures and grain spawn?

For best results, use your products soon after delivery. Most liquid cultures and pre-colonised grain spawn can be stored in the fridge, although certain species, such as Pink Oyster, have different temperature requirements.

10 How long does it take to grow mushrooms from liquid culture or grain spawn?

Growing times depend on the mushroom species, substrate and environmental conditions. Liquid culture requires an additional grain colonisation stage, which can take several weeks. Pre-colonised grain spawn allows you to skip this stage and move directly to preparing your growing substrate.
